How do I remove gel without damaging my nails?

Damage almost always happens at removal, not application. Two causes:

Picking or peeling. Pulling gel off takes the top layer of the nail plate with it.

Forcing it before it's ready. If the gel resists, it isn't softened yet. Reapply the remover and wait another few minutes rather than scraping.

Done properly, the gel should look crumbly and lifted, and glide off with a cuticle pusher. Follow with cuticle oil.

Do I still have to file first?

Yes, briefly and it's what makes the rest of the process fast.

Gel top coat is non-porous. It's designed to keep water and solvent out, which is exactly what makes soaking take twenty minutes. File the surface until the shine is gone and the remover reaches the colour underneath directly.

You're breaking the seal, not filing to the nail. Two minutes of light filing replaces the soak.

Does it work on gel polish from other brands?

It's formulated specifically for S&L gel, but it does work on some soak-off gel polishes, though results vary by brand and formula.

It won't work on hard gel, acrylic, or dip powder. Those have to be filed off.
