Frequently Asked Questions

Do I really need a gel base coat?

Yes. Gel color applied straight onto bare nails lifts within a few days. Color gel is made for pigment and coverage, not adhesion.

S&L Gel Base Coat also acts as a barrier. Natural nails are porous, so dark reds, blues, and neons stain them without a clear layer underneath.

Why is my base coat still sticky after curing?

It's normal that the base coat leaves a tacky film, even when cured.

It's tempting to touch it to check the manicure is going well. In a salon you wouldn't touch the technician's work mid-set, so don't touch your own. Trust the process.

Don't wipe it with alcohol, and apply your first thin coat of color straight onto the sticky layer.

Why does my gel still lift when I use base coat?

Almost always one of three things:

Oil on the nail. Wash and dry isn't enough. The nail plate still has natural oil on it. Buff lightly, then wipe every nail with an alcohol pad and don't touch them after.

Base coat applied too thick. It pools at the cuticle and sidewalls, and that perimeter is where lifting starts. One thin layer is all you need.

Base coat touching skin. Leave a hairline gap at the cuticle. Anything on skin has nothing to bond to.
