Frequently Asked Questions

Do UV gloves protect your fingertips during a gel manicure?

No. S&L Gel Manicure UV Gloves are fingerless by design, so your fingertips and the skin around your nails stay exposed to the lamp. That exposure is unavoidable, because gel only cures under UVA light. The gloves cover the back of the hand and wrist, which is the largest area of skin under the lamp and the area with the most cumulative exposure over years of manicures.

Are they machine washable?

Yes. S&L Gel Manicure UV Gloves are reusable. Hand wash or machine wash in warm water with a mild detergent, rinse thoroughly, and dry flat away from direct heat.

The UV protection comes from the fabric itself rather than a surface treatment (ie. Titanium Dioxide), so ordinary washing does not remove it, but stretching, snagging, and abrasion will thin the weave over time, and thinner fabric lets more UV through.

When to wash them. Filing dust, cuticle oil, and hand cream build up in the weave and can make the fabric stiff. Washing every few manicures is enough for home and salon use.

If gel gets on the glove (this is the important one). Wipe the spot immediately with a lint-free wipe and 99% isopropyl alcohol, before it goes anywhere near the lamp. If the gel has soaked through to your skin, take the glove off and wash your hands before continuing.

What material are they made of?

S&L Gel Manicure UV Gloves are made from a 90% nylon / 10 spandex fibre composition stretch knit, with no latex in the fabric or the cuff.

The fibre content is what does the UV blocking. A tightly knit synthetic blocks far more UVA than a loose cotton or acrylic glove of the same thickness.

On fit. The spandex content gives the fabric enough stretch to fit a range of hand sizes from one size. It's a snug knit, not a compression fit. It should sit close without leaving marks.

One practical note: synthetics don't like acetone. Keep gel remover and remover-soaked cotton off the fabric.
